I previously created a project for 6 Hokki stools for our classroom that totaled over $800 and it was fully funded through the generosity of donors! We are currently enjoying those Hokki stools in the classroom on a daily basis. When I saw how much the students benefitted from the Hokki stools, I was inspired to try some other methods of active seating. I ordered one Bouncy Band so that the students could take a trial run and let me know how they liked it before I created a Donor's Choose project. The kids have loved the Bouncy Band and it gives them the ability to get some physical activity in and keep moving during the times that they are working at their seats. Below is a video explaining how Bouncy Bands work!
Greetings, Second Grade Families! I wanted to let you know about an opportunity that you have to dontate to Whiteford students, specifically your students! I have created a Donor's Choose project to fund 15 Bouncy Bands for our classroom. Donor's Choose is an amazing site that allows people to donate to classrooms in need. Public school teachers can create classroom projects and ANYONE can donate to help out a project that inspires them! Here's What's Happening in Second grade!
Writer's workshop continues to be all about how-to writing, but this week we are kicking it up a notch! Last week, we all wrote about how to make pie in a cup. We learned how to sequence the steps in our how-to writing. This week, the kids get to choose something that they are an expert at and write a how-to piece of their own. We'll go through the writing process together, but each child will have a different topic of his or her choice. During math, we will continue to work on regrouping, but this week we are doing triple-digit addition. Everyone did an amazing job with double-digit addition, so I'm hoping the transition to the next step will be seamless!
Next week will be a short one with two full days and a half-day on Wednesday, December 21st. We'll be enjoying some math & literacy learning centers and wrapping up al of the units we are working on so that we can have a nice fresh start when we return in January. On Wednesday, December 21st, we will be watching a Christmas movie together and enjoying a snack. Kids are invited to wear pj's and can bring slippers or socks to wear in the classroom. I also don't mind if they bring a stuffed friend to snuggle with while we watch the movie. If you have any questions heading into these last few weeks in December, please do not hesitate to call, email, or text me!

Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
Our story for this week is The Legend of the Poinsettia by Tomie DePaola. We'll focus on cause & effect, verb tenses, and comparing Christmas traditions. We'll also be wrapping up our How to Make Pie in a Cup writing. During math, we will continue to work on double-digit addition with regrouping. Towards the end of the week we will have a short assessment before we begin working on triple-digit addition with regrouping.
Here are a few snapshots from our week...
