All of our elementary students had a special visit from State Representative Jason Sheppard. Mr. Sheppard is a Whiteford graduate and came back to share his love of reading with students. Below is a picture of him reading to Mrs. Brunt's and Mrs. Schmidt's second grade students.

This week we have been working on a descriptive writing piece about PB&J. It's always a little more fun to write when it involves food and the kids really have enjoyed this assignment. Today we did a taste test and students had to write six adjectives or descriptive phrases about how their PB&J tasted, felt, and looked. Below are some pictures taken by one of our second grade students. I was busy making PB&J sandwiches and my hands were covered in peanut butter! Vocabulary Cootie CatchersWe also made these little cootie catchers or fortune tellers with our vocabulary words inside. The students had to work with their table mates to pick a vocabulary word from their cootie catcher. Once they had chosen a word, they had to use the word in the sentence. I let them write their sentences on their tables with a dry erase marker. Learning + writing on the table = mission accomplished!
This year's theme for COSI on Wheels was "Current Conditions." We were able to learn all about the weather, thunder, lightning, and what makes a cloud. We had a great time exploring all of the hands-on weather stations and experiencing how weather is created! A BIG thanks to Michaele Shepherd who organizes this event every year and to the parent volunteers who gave their time to man the stations and work with the kids!
Students had a great time today with our hands-on Cheez-It area and perimeter activity. We have been learning all about area and perimeter and we were able to make our own shapes with Cheez-Its and the find the area and perimeter of our shapes. Below are some pictures from this fun and tasty activity!
We had a very busy day today that was jam-packed with learning and fun. This morning began with a visit to the barn where we had the opportunity to see two ewes and their new babies! We are so lucky to be a part of an agricultural school district where students are able to apply their learning firsthand! The kids were so excited and I think they would have stayed outside all day if I had let them. We couldn't get enough of those precious babies! Yummy 2D & 3D ShapesAfter our sheep adventure, we returned to the classroom to apply some of our newly learned geometry skills. We made some yummy 2D and 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. Some of us took our creations home in Ziploc baggies, while others ate their shape creations.
Today we celebrated St. Patrick's Day in style! All of the kids wore green in order to avoid the traditional St. Patty's Day pinch. Unfortunately, I received a few pinches as the kids debated whether or not my shirt was green or blue. I think they really just wanted an excuse to pinch their teacher! In the morning, we found some clues on gold coins in our classroom. A little leprechaun led us on a wild chase around the elementary building as we searched for his pot of gold. Our last stop was in the classroom. The leprechaun said that his pot of gold would be under Mrs. Brunt's desk, but we couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, one of our sweet girls found the pot of gold hiding under Mrs. Brunt's bag! Inside were little treat packages for everyone! We enjoyed eating our candy while we did a leprechaun directed drawing. Students had to listen carefully and follow directions in order to complete their leprechaun drawing. All of the leprechauns were similar, but had their own creative flair!
