I just wanted to write a heartfelt thank you to all of the families of these sweet second graders who took time to write a note of encouragement for our testing week. I wish you could have been in the classroom and seen the smiles that these kiddos had when opening their letters from home. They were so encouraged and even asked if they could take their notes with them to the computer lab while they tested. During testing, I noticed a few of the kids reading their notes with huge smiles on their faces. Your encouragement truly makes a world of difference and I am thankful that you took time to support your second grader! Below are a few pics of the kids with their notes. Pictures were taken by one of our little second grade sweeties and they are adorable!

Last week we learned all about division! Students have gained a great foundation for learning how to multiply and divide over the past several weeks. Pictures below show students engaged in an activity where they had to work as a team to equally divide the dinosaur eggs among the nests. As you can see from their smiles, I think they enjoyed this activity! Little Monster of the WeekNews & Notes for the Week of April 22nd

Here's What's Happening In Second Grade!
We're continuing to learn about multiplication this week and we're making the transition from repeated addition and equal groups to arrays with many engaging games, crafts, and activities. We'll have a little assessment during the week to check in and see how everyone is doing before moving on to division the following week.
Last but not least, just a reminder that we will have a day off of school on Friday, April 19th for Good Friday. School will resume on Tuesday, April 23rd.
Have a wonderful long weekend!

Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
Here are a few things you can do at home to reinforce our learning:
1. Continue reading for at least 20 minutes per night! It's so important to continue to build that reading stamina and allow your child to read material that interests them!
2. Take a few minutes to talk to your child about what he or she is reading. Ask them to tell you about what they read. Does it remind them of another story they have read? Does it remind them of something that has happened in their own life? Can you identify the characters in the story and discuss how the characters feel or act? What does the character look like or say?
Our story for this week is Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream by Deloris Jordan. We'll be learning about and researching Michael Jordan and his hoop dreams. We'll also learn about how his mother and father shared with him the lessons of patience, determination, and hard work.
The kids are so excited about our math time for the remainder of the year because we finally get to dive into multiplication and division! I will introduce multiplication this week with the concept of repeated addition and equal groups. This is a great reminder of WHY it is important for us to know our addition and subtraction facts by memory! We will be using those addition facts and our skip-counting skills to understand multiplication. I strongly recommend having your child continue to practice his or her addition and subtraction facts daily over the summer so that they are ready to hit the ground running in third grade.
