It's a bird! it's a plane! it's second grade!
Here's what's happening in Mrs. brunt's class!
I have just a few simple reminders for Monday, April 4th when we return from break. Please remember to turn in your signed report card envelope and your spring break reading challenge. The challenge is an extra credit assignment and I will award points for completing the challenge. Reading at home is so important and I want to reward all of my second grade sweeties for completing the challenge and spending a little time with some books over break.
Once we return, we will be diving into unit 7 in our Everyday Math curriculum. Unit 7 is all about adding 4 or more addends, which we are already quite competent with, if I do say so myself! We'll also get in-depth with measuring using yards and meters. We'll generate data and learn how to represent data using various types of graphs and we'll also be exploring shapes and their attributes. If you are looking for ways to help your student at home, I recommend practicing those math facts (as always!) and pointing out objects that are the size of a centimeter, inch, yard, and meter. The kids need to understand the sizes of these measurements and be able to have certain objects in mind as a personal reference point. For example, when someone asks me what the size of an inch is, in my mind I might picture the diameter of a quarter. For a centimeter, I might picture the width of a crayon. I don't always have a ruler handy, so it is important to know the general size of these measurements so I can make an estimate.
During our language arts time, we'll be reading a fun play titled Pushing Up the Sky. We'll focus on identifying the problem and solution when reading a text and we'll continue to learn about pronouns. I'll also be introducing a fun how-to writing assignment that we'll complete as a class. Once we complete the assignment as a class, the goal will be for the students to produce their own how-to writing piece and share their writing with the class. By the time we are finished, we should know how to do twenty new things!
