Greetings parents! I've got a lot to say this afternoon, so I will get right down to business! First of all, I would love to have a parent volunteer to organize & plan our classroom Halloween party. I have a whole list of parents who signed up to volunteer at the party, but no head honcho! If two of you want to get together and co-plan that would be perfectly fine with me! You are welcome to use my classroom for a parent planning meeting as well! Let me know if you have any questions. Please contact me if this interests you...PLEASE!!! Also, several of you have called or emailed asking about HAC. HAC is short for Home Access Center and can be found on the Whiteford home page. You can log into your profile at any time to update your contact information. HAC is a great place to stay involved and informed when it comes to your students' grades. I publish all grades on HAC, so you can stay up to date and not have any surprises come report card time! If you have any questions regarding HAC, please contact Malinda Luzier in the elementary office. Finally, I received the Reading Eggs passwords today! Woohoo! The kids took their placement tests in the computer lab today, so they should be all set and ready to use Reading Eggs at home! I will be sending home passwords tomorrow, so please keep your eye on your student's mail. Put this password in a safe place so that your second grade sweetie can use Reading Eggs throughout the school year! Thanks for bearing with me as I shared all of that news! Have a fabulous Monday evening!

During Science class today, we wrapped up our plant unit with a fun & tasty activity! We reviewed the different parts of a plant & tasted all the parts of a plant. We had sunflower seeds (seeds), broccoli florets (flowers), baby spinach leaves (leaves), celery (stems), and carrots (roots). The students DEVOURED the veggies and everyone found something that they enjoyed. Many of the kids even had seconds and thirds of the tasty plant parts! Look at that little cutie in the back hiding from the camera! Ha! Too funny!
We've been busy this week continuing to build our reading stamina, but we've also started our Work on Writing! We began earlier this week by talking about the importance of writing during the Daily 5. Why do we write every day? We want to become better writers! We've been building our writing stamina all week and we are up to 8 minutes of non-stop, focused writing! You should see the material that these kids are producing each day...it's just plain AWESOME! The best part of it is that they are excited about increasing their writing time each day. The students' "jobs" while doing Work on Writing are:
Please check your child's backpack tonight for the Xtra Math flyer that I am sending home today! This flyer includes a special enrollment code for your student and will instruct you on how to set up your FREE Xtra Math account at home. We will be using Xtra Math in the classroom daily, but it's also a great tool to use at home to practice math facts. Questions? Contact me and I will be happy to help! Have a great Tuesday!
Our first spelling list came home last Friday in the weekly newsletter. Spelling lists will be sent home every week, but you can also find our weekly spelling lists on SpellingCity.com. Go to www. spellingcity.com, click on the "Find a List" tab at the top of the page. Type "Katie Brunt" and choose to search by teacher name. My name should appear along with the name of the school. Lists should be in order, but sometimes they get jumbled. If this should happen, you can find the list for the week using the name of our Treasures story for the week. For example, our story this week is David's New Friends, so our spelling list will be listed under the name of that story.
A spelling pre-test (that will not be taken for a grade) will be given each Monday. If a student scores 100% on this test, they will NOT have to take the post-test on Friday. A spelling post-test will be given each Friday and will count for a grade. We ended the week by completing Read-to-Self for 11 minutes! Awesome! This past week we talked about the teacher's job and the students' jobs during Read-to-Self. My job is to work in a small group with students while other students are independently working on Daily 5 centers. Students' jobs include:
Today we read an adorable book called You're Finally Here by Melanie Watt. The main character is a rabbit who is so excited that the reader is finally here, but wants to know..."But seriously, where were you?" The kids were cracking up at this silly story! Here are just a few of the kids with their rabbit writing craftivities!
Today we read Ruby the Copycat by Peggy Rathmann. We discussed all of our special and unique qualities and the importance of being ourselves. Below are just a few of our special second graders with their adorable copycat writing craftivities!
Howdy Parents! Just wanted to pop in with a quick note about Scholastic Book Clubs. I get so excited about Scholastic because it gives me a chance to grow my classroom library and it gives you a chance to order books for your own children as well! Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be sending home a Scholastic brochure and letter. At the top of the letter is the online activation code. You can order right from your computer and you never have to worry about sending in a check or money with your student. It's a win-win situation for all of us! Scholastic orders for the month of September are due on Thursday, September 26th. If you order this month I have the opportunity to earn up to 10,000 bonus points. Bonus points=FREE books for our classroom that your kids get to enjoy on a daily basis! Studies have shown that the more contact children have with books, the better readers they will become. Let's work together on surrounding all of your second graders with an abundance of books! If you are interested, check out this great article below on the importance of a classroom library! The Importance of the Classroom Library
