Good evening students and parents! I just wanted to post a reminder message on the blog that we will be having a half-day of school on Monday, January 27th to make up for our cancellation last Friday. Middle and high school students need to make up exams and teacher's will be entering grade card information during the afternoon. Dismissal is at 11:10am. With the COLD weather forecast this week, I am not going to send out a newsletter and we will not have a Buckaroo of the Week. I don't want anyone to miss out on several days of being the Buckaroo if we end up having school cancellations! Our story for the week is The Alvin Ailey Kids: Dancing As a Team. You will find our spelling words on Spelling City. Also, we will be wrapping up Unit 6 in math and hopefully having our Unit 6 Progress Check sometime during the first week of February. In science, we will begin our chapter on heat, light, and sound. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! Stay warm!

We wrapped up our Matter unit today with an awesome root beer float experiment! We learned that root beer floats are "Triple Threats" because they contain a solid (vanilla ice cream), a liquid (root beer), and gas (foam & bubbles from carbonation). Each student was able to make a root beer float craftivity (pictured above) and enjoy a delicious root beer float!
Students had so much fun researching all different types of penguins on the iPads this week! Did you know there are 17 different types of penguins? Did you know that all penguins live South of the Equator? Our class paired up and we were able to research 13 of them! We spent several hours researching our assigned penguins, taking notes, and drawing pictures and diagrams. Then, we were able to write some fantastic informational penguin booklets. I think we have some future authors and illustrators in our classroom! It was such a pleasure to watch the kids work together to research. They kept telling me over and over how much fun they were having! This week we have started working on our timed addition tests. Students have 1 minute to complete a timed addition test. All students start with +0 facts and will go through +12 facts. When students score 100%, they are able to move on to the next test. Each time a student passes a test, they are able to add an ingredient to their ice cream sundae poster. If they complete all tests successfully and complete their ice cream sundae poster by Friday, March 14th, they will be able to celebrate with an ice cream sundae party!
We welcomed 2014 today, even if it is halfway through the month of January! It was fun being back in the classroom, seeing our friends, and sharing stories from Christmas vacation. Every hour we opened a surprise New Year's bag and found goodies such as stickers, new erasers, candy, a dance party, and we even got to take our shoes off in the classroom! We talked about setting some goals for the New Year and learned about resolutions. Below are a few pictures of the kiddos with their 2014 hats! Cute as buttons! On Another Note...Several changes have been made to our school calendar due to the school cancellations last week. We will have a full week of school this week (January 13-17). Next week, students will not have school on Monday, January 20th. Staff will be participating in a Professional Development day. Exams for middle and high school students have been moved to Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th. Students will have half-days of school on both of these days. Please contact me with any questions or concerns!
Greetings Students and Parents! I hope that everyone has enjoyed their extended Christmas vacation! I'm sure it's safe to say that many of us are ready to head back to school…including me!!! I'm thankful that the leaders of our district have kept students and teachers safe this past week by canceling school, but I also miss the kids and I am beginning to experience some cabin fever! When we finally head back to the classroom we will be researching penguins on the iPads. Students will choose a penguin and team up with several classmates to conduct research on their penguin. Each group will fill out a graphic organizer and record all of the juicy details that they find while researching. After our research is complete, each student will write a more formal, informational writing piece. I can't wait to begin working on our penguin research! Hopefully I will see all of you very soon!
