We're Learning So Much...It's Scary!
Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
During writer's workshop, we will be reviewing the writing process and getting back into the swing of things with an original how-to writing. Each individual student will be asked to write an original how-to piece about something they are an expert on. For example, I am going to model a how-to writing piece about baking chocolate chip cookies because it's something I like to do and I am good at! This is going to be a great way for us to review the how-to process because next week we will embark on a new how-to writing project that will integrate S.T.E.A.M and writing. More details will be coming soon, so please keep your eyes on your child's mail and on the blog!
Our anchor texts for this week will be Flight School and Penguin Problems. We'll be comparing and contrasting both of these texts, learning some new penguin vocabulary, gathering information from the illustrations, and determining lessons that can be learned from the main characters in the story.
Math will be all about double-digit subtraction with regrouping. The kids made 2 and 3-digit addition look easy before we left for Christmas break, so I'm hoping that the switch to subtraction is seamless! Subtraction is always a little more difficult to understand, so we'll have plenty of opportunities for practice in the classroom. Below are some saying that we will be learning that will help us to decide how we need to solve each math problem we come in contact with this week!
