We had a lot of Frankenfun in 2nd grade today! We read the story Even Monsters Need Haircuts by Matthew McElligot. Then, we completed a Frankenfold BME (beginning, middle, and end) book. Our birthday boy is showing an example of his book. We also made some delicious Frankenpudding. We wrapped up our day with some Frankenfacts double-digit addition problems and our Unit 2 Math Progress Check. You can see our Frankenfacts hanging in our room if you stop in for the Halloween party tomorrow!
This morning we had a special visit from some very adorable Havanese puppies! One of our second graders brought these cuties in to visit this morning and receive some snuggles from everyone in our class. We all fell in love with them! After computers this morning, we were supposed to enjoy a special treat made by Mrs. Brunt... However, once we returned from computers, our treat was gone and we found this note in it's place... He also left this note on the Smart Board... Here are a few photos of our scavenger hunt. We traveled to the cafeteria, the playground, the library, and back to our classroom! Finally, we returned to the classroom and found our treat sitting on Mrs. Brunt's desk! The mystery was solved and our treats were returned safe and sound. We thought the Candy Corn Bandit was done with all of his trickery and mischief, but... The Candy Corn Bandit strikes again! He ate this little sweetie's Hershey's Kiss and left a mess when he was done scarfing it down! Apparently, no treats are safe in our room!
We had so much fun making these super cute spider fact hats! It was amazing to see all of the new facts and vocabulary that we learned over the past week. We also compared spiders and insects using a venn diagram, pictured below.
The Unit 2 math review came home today and we will have our Unit 2 Progress Check next Wednesday, October 30th. I just wanted to post a reminder about the term "helper fact." I know that this is not a common term that you or I may have used when we were in elementary school, but it is a helpful strategy that helps students with their addition and subtraction facts. The example given on the review sheet is 7+8= _____. Students are asked to write the helper fact. A helper fact is a doubles fact such as 7+7=14. If the student knows that 7+7=14, then 7+8 must equal 15.
I hope that this explanation is helpful! We will go over the review next week to make sure everyone is prepared for the test! Have a great weekend! Monday: Pajama Day
Tuesday: Wear Red Wednesday: Crazy Hair Day Thursday: Bring your costume to school. We continued our spider learning today with a spider "can, have, are" graphic organizer. The students recalled information that we have been learning in order to fill out the chart below. They did a great job and are remembering some great spider facts! We also did a true and false spider sort. Students had to identify which statements about spiders were true and which were false. Party UpdateA BIG thanks to the parents who have contacted me and volunteered to bring in items for our party. The only things left on the list are: a box of Cheez-It crackers, sliced apples and caramel dip, and cheese and crackers.
Today was our first day of Spider Week and we had a great day filled to the brim with lots of learning! We began recording our previous spider knowledge, questions we had about spiders, and new learning about spiders that occurred today. We decided to leave room for more spider facts that we learn later on this week! We have also been learning about facts and opinions. This is a pretty difficult concept for 2nd graders to grasp, so we practice whenever we can. Today we sorted spider facts and opinions and everyone did a great job! We also made these adorable spider snacks this afternoon! Last, but not least…this is how we roll in 2nd grade! Coat and tie are optional, but elbow length gloves are a must! We get our learning done in style!
Good evening, families! We are still in need of quite a few items for our "Spooktacular Celebration" party on October 30th. I know it's about a week and a half away, but this teacher likes to be prepared! Items still needed include: 20 Capri-Sun juice pouches, cheese and crackers, sliced apples and caramel dip, a box of Cheez-Its, shelled & salted peanuts, candy corn, and Cocoa Puffs cereal. If you can donate any of these items, please email me ASAP! Thanks for your help! The kids and I appreciate it very much and are very thankful!
