We also learned about a fun game, called Dreidel, that Jewish children play. Instead of playing with pennies, we played with m&m's and made the game even sweeter! Below is a picture of our game board. We didn't have official dreidels, so we played with a paper clip spinner, which worked perfectly!
Today we packed our bags and headed across the Atlantic Ocean to Israel. We learned all about Hanukkah. Did you know that Hanukkah means "rededication"? We read about about how Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah for eight days and eight nights, lighting a candle on the menorah each day. The candle in the middle that lights the other candles is called the Shamash. In the past, children used to receive gold coins called gelt, but now people exchange small gifts each night of the Hanukkah celebration. They really had a great time and I think they would have played all afternoon if I had let them! Unfortunately, we had to head back to reality and do some math! Last, but not least, we learned this very fun dreidel song. I've been humming & singing it all afternoon. Watch with caution…it's a catchy tune! "Take my picture, Mrs. Brunt!"
