We're Learning so much...it's Scary!
Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
Our text for this week will be A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. We'll be learning all about how to identify and describe the main character of a story. We'll also be learning how to write or retell a summary of a story. A summary retells the events of a story in a much shorter version. Our grammar skill for the week will be learning how to put words in ABC order. Everyone did a great job of studying spelling words at home last week. Spelling City passwords came home on Friday and you will now be able to access the paid subscription to Spelling City. I have assigned several practice activities on Spelling City, so please encourage your child to sign in at home and practice their words using this amazing tool.
Last week we kicked off Writing Boot Camp and we are in the process of learning our writing chant. This chant is designed to help your student remember the writing process, so you might hear them singing about brainstorming, writing, revising, editing, and publishing in the coming weeks! We've already started working on our first personal narrative and the final product will be a fun paper bag book.
During math, we will focus on identifying patterns on a hundreds chart, skip counting by 5's and 10's, and classifying a number as odd or even. We will be using a really fun web-based game called "Splat Square" to identify patterns on a hundreds chart. You can try it out at home by clicking HERE!
