Second grade students came together once again for another STEM challenge! Yesterday we looked at teepee building from the Native Americans point of view and today we learned all about boat building from the pilgrims point of view. Students were challenged to build the Mayflower out of modeling clay and load it up with pilgrims (mini marshmallows), livestock (Tootsie Rolls), and cargo (pennies). The goal was to build a boat that would float! We had to remind the students not to eat the pilgrims and the livestock! Below is a picture of the materials that each group received. The "Atlantic Ocean" is pictured below. This is where students came to test their boats, problem solve, and make changes to their designs. It was awesome to hear the conversations that took place as students tested their boats and discussed what was working well and what changes they needed to make. Last, but not least, here are some snapshots of the kids working together in their groups and testing their innovative and creative vessels! To see Mrs. Schmidt's AWESOME video, please click HERE!
