Shiver Me Timbers!
Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
During writer's workshop, we will begin working on opinion writing. We'll be reading a book called Hey Little Ant by Philip M. Hoose. Students will have to decide if they are Team Ant or Team Kid and we will write an opinion piece providing reasons from the character's point of view.
Our story for the week is Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell. Our focus for the week will be looking at the illustrations to learn how the author uses the illustrations to help tell the story. We'll answer questions such as, "How do the illustrations help me understand the characters, setting, and events of the story?" and "What is happening in the illustrations and how does it make me feel?" We'll also learn about Jane Goodall and read a nonfiction reader about Chimpanzees.
We've been very busy in class preparing for our third and final NWEA test of the year. The NWEA is a great way to measure progress and gives me an idea of what each student needs to work on to take their learning to the next level. In class, I've been working with a small intervention group on vowels, vowel teams, prefixes and suffixes, and irregular spelling. As a whole class, we've been focusing on using context clues to identify unknown words that we might come across when we're reading. Here are a few things you can do at home to reinforce our learning:
1. Continue reading for at least 20 minutes per night! It's so important to continue to build that reading stamina and allow your child to read material that interests them!
2. Take a few minutes to talk to your child about what he or she is reading. Ask them to tell you about what they read. Does it remind them of another story they have read? Does it remind them of something that has happened in their own life? Did they come across any words that they didn't know and were they able to use context clues to determine what they word was?
