Here's What's Happening in Second Grade!
During writer's workshop we will wrap up our last few lessons on journal writing and expectations. We'll end the week with some reinforcement of things that good writers do and set some goals for our writing for the remainder of the first quarter.
Math continues to be all about place value. We're continuing to learn how to compose and decompose numbers, how to represent numbers using pictorial models, and how to write numbers in standard (187), expanded (100+80+7) and word form (one hundred eighty seven). We've learned all about ones, tens, and hundreds and this week we will journey into the land of the thousands! We continue to focus on even and odd, so it would be awesome if you have an opportunity to reinforce this at home. It can be as simple as looking out the window while you're driving and saying, "Hey! There's five cows. Is that an even or odd number of cows?" Remind your child to think in pairs and remember the odd man out!
We'll end the week with a super fun science and engineering activity. Students will earn their Golden Tickets (think Willy Wonka) to become candy scientists! Our focus for this activity will be using trial and error and learning all about what makes candy sticky. We'll use our sticky candy to be automotive engineers and build candy cars. We'll also incorporate a little heath lesson by learning about how that sticky candy can cause cavities!
